Biochar Production & Defensible Space Management
Wassail Landcare offers carbon sequestration services in the form biochar production. We do this by converting biomass into biochar using our Ring of Fire™ Flame-cap Kiln developed by Kelpie Wilson of Wilson Biochar Associates. We offer this service as a low-emissions alternative to chipping or “composting” woody debris. Our kiln is modular and portable and can be used safely on most work sites. We offer these services to clients who are generating a considerable amount of biomass either due to tree clearing/removal, storm damage, non-animal derived agricultural waste or invasive species removal.
Biochar conversion is included in our defensible spaces and fuels reductions work, as a means of keeping the carbon on site while mitigating fire-risk through dead-wooding and thinning ladder fuels in small acre woodlands or around structures.
Currently about 65% of all our orchard prunings are converted into biochar which is then used by local farmers, home gardeners and landscape professionals. We hope to increase this percentage as our efforts to share these practices continue.
